A Kamloops youth has been charged with aggravated assault in connection with the stabbing of a cab driver on Wednesday.

Austin Eyres, 19, was to appear in provincial court Friday.

Eyres was arrested Thursday after police circulated video images and a description of a suspect in the investigation.

Cal Huntington suffered life-threatening injuries early Wednesday. He was stabbed after he drove a fare from Sahali to Pleasant Street. The suspect fled on foot.

Huntington remains in RIH but is expected to recover from his wounds. His employer, Kami Cabs, intends to review driver safety procedures as a result of the assault.

The company is also planning a fundraiser for Huntington, who has been an employee for nine years. Manager Satinder Mann said donations can be dropped off at Kami Cabs, 209 Leigh Rd. in North Kamloops.

Eyres was previously known to police.
