Welcome to NewsKamloops, the newest source of information for and about our community

August 4, 2015 2:00 A.M.

Welcome to NewsKamloops, the newest source for news in the Tournament Capital of Canada and the Thompson Nicola region.

This is the first day of what we hope will be years of service to our communities on the newskamloops.com website.

Four of us — with decades of experience in Kamloops and a long record of community involvement — are collaborating on this venture, and we’re excited about it.

Claude Richmond, and Mel Rothenburger have spent the past several months working on the NewsKamloops concept, a unique umbrella medium that brings together news coverage, features and two local blogs that have established a special niche — Gregg Drinnan’s Taking Note hockey blog and Rothenburger’s Armchair Mayor on civic issues.

“I’m kind of the new kid on the block,” said Richmond, the President of parent company First Choice News, and Publisher of NewsKamloops.

Best known for his distinguished career in provincial politics, Richmond cut his teeth in radio. “It’s thrilling to be in the media again and to be associated with such a talented group,” he said.

Rothenburger, who will manage content and design for the website, said Kamloops is ready for a new daily source of news and features.

“We’re modelling NewsKamloops after a newspaper style but with electronic delivery,” Rothenburger said. The website has been designed and developed with the expertise of Net Shift Media of Kamloops.

Mike Youds, a newspaper journalist known for his coverage of all aspects of life in Kamloops, will head up day-to-day news coverage.

"People have been telling us for the past 18 months that they feel there is a gap in local news coverage," Youds said. "NewsKamloops is designed to meet that demand."

Richmond said NewsKamloops will grow and develop as time goes on. “It’s important for us to know how we’re doing, so we encourage and welcome feedback on what people think.”

Congrats to the News Kamloops team. Wishing you all the best on your new online platform. I'm expecting yours to be a shinking example for other disenfranchised media types and news consumers across B.C. Good luck!
