Rubber will be burning and dirt will be flying in Merritt this weekend.

The Pacific Forest Rally, a stage rally event set in the hills and forests around Merritt, starts Friday.

The event has been running since 2002 and draws drivers from throughout Western Canada.

Kelowna rally driver Mark Jennings-Bates, who has won multiple rally championships, will be breaking in a new co-driver this weekend.

“The awesome thing about rally is the chemistry between the co-driver and the driver has to be there for everything to work correctly. I have had a few co-drivers in the past who have been nothing short of amazing and the proof is in the results, but now it is turning into a family affair,” said Jennings-Bates.

The team is sponsored by several local businesses, including Valley Mitsubishi, and will be competing in a classic Mitsubishi Evo IV.
