A local self-advocate gives a talk Saturday, not about disability, but about “differently abled people.”
TNRD Library System hosts Krystian Shaw, creator and publisher of The Kamloops Self-Advocate newsletter, at the Kamloops Library on Aug. 6, 2-3:30 p.m. He will talk about the creation of the newsletter, the organization’s goals and the effect he hopes to have on people.
The newsletter is for and about people who Shaw prefers to describe as "differently abled," with the aim to improve people’s lives and help erase stigma around diverse abilities and mental health issues.
The publication’s mission is to present positive stories that highlight people’s successes while entertaining and educating their readership. It also aims to create opportunities for individuals to voice their opinions and concerns. The goal for the future is to have an advisory group that can guide this process and help to make it even more successful.
