KELOWNA — Okanagan Lake residents evacuated during the Bear Creek wildfire can expect to return home soon.
Central Okanagan Emergency Operations (COEC) says efforts are progressing to have those residents back home tonight, Wednesday, Aug. 24.
Despite that progress, they remind residents that evacuation order and alerts remain in effect as of right now, until further notice comes from emergency personnel.
Westside Road is expected to open to two-way traffic by early Wednesday afternoon.
“The area will remain an active worksite and people are asked to use extreme caution when driving through the fire area as they may encounter fire and utility crews,” the COEC noted.
Bear Creek Main Forest Service Road is closed to all traffic except for local residents and the BC Wildfire Service will allow the resumption of traffic when it is safe.
The Bear Creek Provincial Park will remain closed at this time as will hiking trails in the area, due to the ongoing fire suppression effort.
“Over the next few days people can expect to see visible smoke and flame from the fire site and firefighters will continue working to completely extinguish the fire."
