VERNON — Parking violators in Lexington, Ky., are helping to feed the less fortunate and one Vernon city councillor is wondering if the same can be done here.
The U.S. city introduced a system whereby people can pay their parking tickets by donating items to the local food bank.
Motorists will have the option until Dec. 18 and Coun. Scott Anderson said it is something he would like Vernon council to look at.
“It's a good idea, but we will have to look at the revenue. The problem with meters is the city counts on them for a portion of its revenue,” said Anderson, adding he will bring the idea up with council.
If his fellow councillors like the idea, then staff will be instructed to review it and provide a report.
“On the face of it, it looks good, but we have to see what the pros and cons are,” said Anderson Thursday.
The idea is gaining support on the Vernon Community Forum Facebook page, with numerous people encouraging the idea.
