Keep an eye out for runners on the road Sunday in the SportChek Kamloops Marathon.
As many as 650 runners are expected to depart from McArthur Island Parkway at intervals beginning at 6 a.m.
The annual event, a qualifier for the famed Boston Marathon, is a fundraiser for TRU athletics.
“Monies raised go to WolfPack scholarships and bursaries,” said Anita Ashton, event organizer.
The qualifying portion of the marathon is first to head out, followed by a marathon relay. At 9 a.m., 8-km and 3-km runners depart.
“It’s a great family event,” Ashton said. “The youngest participant is three years old and the oldest is 77.”
A race expo and package pickup take place on Saturday, July 23, at McArthur Island Sports and Events Centre. The Expo will run from noon to 6 p.m. and race package pickup is from noon to 5 p.m.
Last year’s race attracted about 500 participants, impressive considering the first race six years ago drew only a fraction of that. Racers come from all over the world — China, Spain, Alaska and Texas — a midsummer booster for the Tournament Capital.
“It’s attracting a lot of people to Kamloops.”
