Still unconscious and on life support after an assault two months ago, Jessie Simpson turned 19 years old on July 26.

In support of the Savona teen and his mother Sue — who has been at his bedside daily since the assault — friends are organizing a fundraiser on Saturday, Aug. 13, 3-8 p.m. at the Double Tree by Hilton, 339 St. Paul St.

“She knows Jessie and he would want everyone to celebrate no matter what,” said Kathy Fulmer-Desmond, one of the organizers.

Fulmer-Desmond first got to know Sue Simpson when she ran Savona General Store. They’ve stayed in touch ever since.

“This is to support Sue and Jessie,” Fulmer-Desmond said. “She was always a single mom and she’s been unable to work because she’s at the hospital 24/7.”

She is able to stay downtown, thanks to accommodation that was donated.

As for the fundraiser, 150 tickets will go on sale for $25 each on Friday, Aug. 5, at the Doubletree, Nu Leaf Produce Market, 740 Fortune Dr., or Kamloops This Week, 1365B Dalhousie Drive. If people wish to donate cash instead of purchasing a ticket, they can do that at the same locations.

The fundraiser will include live music, food, a door prize and silent auction. Donations for the auction can be dropped off at the hotel.

“We are going to plan something on a larger scale down the road,” Fulmer-Desmond said. “We would really like to open it up to the entire community. This is relatively small but it will help them get through the next few weeks.”

Kristopher Teichrieb remains in custody, facing a charge of attempted murder in connection with the June 19 assault. His bail application was denied last week.
