Canada wins eighth straight Hlinka Memorial

Maschmeyer has Olympics in sights

Team Canada now has won eight straight U-18 Ivan Hlinka Memorial tournaments. Canada ran its streak to eight with a 7-3 victory over Sweden on Saturday before 654 fans in Breclav, Czech Republic. . . . This one was over in the first period as Canada outshot Sweden 16-1 in taking a 4-0 lead. . . . F Pierre-Luc Dubois of the Cape Breton Screaming Eagles had two goals for Canada, with singles coming from F Tanner Kaspick of the Brandon Wheat Kings, F Tyler Benson of the Vancouver Giants, F Michael McLeod of the Mississauga Steelheads, F Jordan Kyrou of the Sarnia Sting and F Beck Malenstyn of the Calgary Hitmen. . . . Canada was 2-for-5 on the PP, and 5-for-7 on the PK. . . . Canada went 5-0 in winning the tournament. . . . In the third-place game, Russia edged Finland, 4-3. . . . Stan Butler of the OHL’s North Bay Battalion was Canada’s head coach. Shaun Clouston, the GM/head coach of the Medicine Hat Tigers, was one of the assistant coaches.

Emerance Maschmeyer has idolized Shannon Szabados for years. Both are goaltenders and both had to play in male leagues in order to advance their games. Maschmeyer, the younger sister of former Kamloops Blazers D Bronson Maschmeyer, now hopes to do what Szabados has done twice — win Olympic gold. . . .
